I have often stuck my nose into American bizarre gun laws and always thought that as the screwy gun nuts won't allow a ban on guns and offering thoughts and prayers after another loony shoots a bunch of school children, why not just make it exorbitantly expensive to buy a gun and the bullets in the first place which would shift them out of the hands of anyone but the most dedicated of people fond of propelling a bullet into someone.
Appears that someone in California read my blog and decided that English woman may be on to something and from July, California will be whacking an extra 11% tax on guns and ammunition to reduce gun sales which immediately got the National Rifle Association squeaking in protest which means they know this would have an impact on gun sales.
It is a well worn path they are treading which is that by making a given product more expensive, cigarettes and alcohol for example, such a tax leads people to buy less of it, reducing the harm to society and with the annual gun death rate hitting 40,000 in America and 120,000 injured, that is a lot of harm to society being done right there.
Economists are estimating that the Californian gun tax should be highly effective and consider that for every 1% increase in price, demand decreases by 2.6% and the the California tax would reduce gun sales by between 30% to 44%.
If applied across the country, a drop of a third of guns sold would do wonders to reduce the amount of people attending funerals or praying next to hospital beds of loved ones but the obvious problem is anyone wanting a cheaper gun or bullets would just pop over the border to buy it but other states struggling against gun related deaths would be watching closely how things work out in California and replicate it themselves and reducing the opportunity for the sort of deranged people who like to quote their rights under the second amendment after each shooting.
Relax gun nuts, you can still compensate for whatever inadequacies you feel owning a gun makes up for, you will just have to pay through the nose for it. You are very welcome.

intentionally misleading facts - classic journalist with an agenda tactic
the 40,000 death rate is accurate, but that includes about 20,000 suicides. one of my friends shot himself, but before his death, his brother-n-law committed suicide by hanging himself. are you going ban every mechanism that can be used to commit suicide? no. okay, then stop acting like getting rid of guns would significantly reduce the gun deaths because of someone wants to kill themself guns are convenient but not required...

the 20,000 remaining deaths gun deaths are almost exclusively gangs and related criminals killing other gang members and criminals fighting over drugs and drug trafficking. banning drugs hasn't prevented criminal drug use in America, why would banning guns prevent criminal gun us in America?
lastly, estimates indicate that there are already 300,000,000 guns in the US. why would a decrease in new gun sales impact the death rate?
and of course we come to what appears to me the mandatory high level of disagreeableness of leftists. (did you read about the "big 5", aka OCEAN, used by psychologists, or is your ego to large to admit that you could learn something from a "gun nut"?). Wanting to own a gun does not make someone a nut. ranting about something that doesn't directly impact the ranter (anti-gun leftist) is more the making of a nut...
leftist rants against guns has failed to work in the US for several reasons:
- Americans fear a tyrannical government more than crime
- Americans know that police rarely show up to stop a crime in progress, so we are on our own if some bad shit starts...
- Most gun crime is committed in a few inner city regions dominated by drug gangs and if you stay out of those areas, you risk of gun death is near zero
- Guns are useful on farms and ranches when dealing with natural predators, and almost half of our population lives in rural areas (where people have guns and low gun crime...)
- while disgusting and nasty, most mass shootings occur at places that prohibit guns or where people are unlikely to be armed.
- most murders not related to drugs are committed by mentally ill people, and most Americans don't want to restrict the rights of 99.99999 percent of the nation because of 00.00001 of people. several of the America's founders said something like this, "a person that would give up their freedom for security, deserves neither"...
so, get off of guns and America.
some great material for you to rant about includes crime in russia, suppression of women in palestine/iran/iraq/afghanistan/syria/egypt/etc, suppression and genocide in china, genocide and mass rape in the sahel, crime and corruption in south africa, murder and corruption in mexico/peru/chile/venezuela, suppression of the populace in cuba, etc...
I do enjoy reading your gun nut logic because i find it reassuring that nobody, not even the most densest, foaming at the mouth right winger, is advocating the same gun laws here. Makes me happy i live in a country where your views would be immediately ignored by everyone.

we have hundreds of gun laws. hundreds.
we also have 330 million people, and we have a 2,000 mile border with a third world nation that is a high speed motorway into our nation for other third world nations...
then, there are the inner city ghettos created by lbj's great society and decades of welfare. the gang wars of the ghettos and the third world nations tend to spill out of their locale into the rest of the US.
oh, we have police, and they will show up to protect the evidence (your body) so they can arrest and prosecute the murderers (up to 50% of murderers get prosecuted now, and some even get a few years in jail).
so, why don't all Americans own guns? because, despite the constant harping by the left, the vast majority of Americans feel safe. and despite the constant harping by the left, the vast most gun owners never need to use their firearms except for sport shooting and hunting.
