1987

Twas a cold, drizzly and overcast August morning and suddenly, out of the radio speakers, came a song to send my mind spinning back to the 1987. 'Live It Up' by Mental as Anything was the soundtrack to Crocodile Dundee and will be forever a defining song of the era.
So inspired was i to relive my bygone years, i dug out my 'Now That's What I
call Music' 1980s box set and reminisced to the sound of 1987.

Faith - George Michael, Here I Go Again - Whitesnake, Heaven Is a Place on Earth - Belinda Carlisle, (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2, I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany, I Wanna Dance with Somebody - Whitney, La Isla Bonita - Madonna, Livin' On a Prayer - Bon Jovi, Luka - Suzanne Vega, Mony Mony - Billy Idol, Need You Tonight - INXS, The Final Countdown - Europe, Lady in Red - Chris DeBurgh, Walk Like An Egyptian - The Bangles, Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil, You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon.

Then it suddenly dawned on me. 1987 was 20 years ago. How depressing is that thought!

Oh, wow. I love most of those, and I don't like to think of songs from the '80s as "oldies."

Very depressing!

Nahhh....just think of it like a fine wine, Lucy. We are getting better with age just as music keeps getting worse!

Erm, if I'm ever lucky enough to be invited to a 'party at your place', Lucy, I'm afraid that I might have to bring my MP3 player - and turn it up loud! Sorry to say that there's a few songs in that lot which would probably turn me psychotic if I was to hear them again. Or I'd at least grind my teeth down to jagged, bloody stumps...

Still, your post does bring to mind the eternal question: Whatever happened to Tiffany, huh?

20 years ago today, I had graduated college, started work, and praying that I would never have to hear Tiffany again.

It's things like this that remind me that nostalgia is most definitely something which has gone through many filters to remove the detritus and crap.

Tiffany? White Snake? Whitney Houston? Madonna?

I shudder at the very thought.

Tiffany has tried for a comeback, and also was a Playboy centerfold, that's all I know.

And I remember the Grateful Dead having their one and only top 10 hit that year, as well.

However, i was managing a record store that year and thought the music listed by Lucy was a depressing lot even when it was new. That was the year I really started paying attenton to jazz.

Hold your horses, woah there, down Shep etc etc.
I never said i liked these songs, i just listed the ones i thought would be most well known off the 1987 album of the box set. Chris De Burgh? Tiffany? Paul Simon?
Credit me with some musical taste per-lease!!
OK, Livin' On A Prayer i admit to liking but the rest, per-lease!!!

Yeah, I was 18 in 1987. Remember all of the tunes you mention, and hated all but 4 of them. I'll not tell you which ones, so don't ask. The 80s did have some great punk and alternative from the likes of the Pixies, Black Flag, Green River (which evolved into Mother Love Bone which evolved into Pearl Jam), Mudhoney, The Replacements, Circle Jerks, Big Audio Dynamite, Dinosaur Jr., Camper Van Beethoven, the Smithereens, The Stone Roses, and the Smiths, to name a lot.

No lie, I'm watching VH-1 about the hottest hotties of the 80's (Sorry, PBS is in reruns), and Tiffany is on right now, teenage son, playboy centerfold(Debbie Gibson as well). I do have to say, she looks awfully good, but then again, I'm a 41 yr old balding stockbroker.

Hey, Lucy, I tried to get your email address but the About Me wasn't working. Just wondering if there were any dramas with Newstex. If you could email me if there are I'd sure appreciate it! Cheers.

INXS.
Michael Hutchence (R.I.P.)
drooollll

Saw them at Red Rocks in 1986 in the pouring rain. Ruined a pair of vintage beaded gloves that night.
It was awesome.

The Power Station, The Specials, Kraftwerk, P.I.L, Go West, UB40, OMD, Kate Bush - there was a few decent bands and tunes around then - but your right Lucy, it's difficult to believe it was 20 years ago.
