I'm not really sure how it started back in the 90s but today is the annual meeting of the 0104 Club, those of us born on the 1st April.
We meet up in the same coffee house, have a couple of lattes, shoot the breeze and then go back to our lives and agree to meet up at the same time, same place next year.
Another 0104 Club tradition is that George, the cafe owner, will play Marvin Gaye on the cafe sound system to mark the passing of Marvin Gaye on this day in 1984, accidentally killed by his father.
It has been said that his songs saw the end of many virginities which is something nobody saw coming from a man with Gay as a surname who suffered homophobic jibes all through his childhood, weird what adding an e at the end of your name can achieve.
He left home to join the Air Force to escape his violent father and earn a living as a drummer but got the chance to sing and the next few years went by in a blur of cocaine, touring, wrecked a marriages and classic singles but that all came to an end when he tried to calm things down in his life by going to live with his parents.
For their protection, instead of a burglar alarm or a dog and this being in America, he bought them a gun which his father showed his appreciation for by shooting him with it during a heated argument and leaving behind a legacy of showing the World why America is so respected musically across the world and why nobody else in the World has the same bat-shit crazy gun laws they have.
If you happen to be passing a cafe this afternoon and you hear the strains of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' and see a group of people slurping latte's and laughing raucously, pop over and say hi and if you are also celebrating a birthday today, pull up a chair.
