The Truth Comes Out

Cast your minds back to last summer and the Lebanon Israeli conflict. While the World screamed for the killing to stop the reasoning from the pro-war lobby was, Lebanon started it. Lame of course but that was their reasoning.
Turns out that preparations for the war were actually drawn up at least four months before two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by Hizbullah, Ehud Olmert, the prime minister, has admitted.
His submission to a commission of inquiry, leaked yesterday, contradicted the impression at the time that Israel was provoked into a battle for which it was ill-prepared. Mr Olmert told the Winograd commission, a panel of judges charged with investigating Israel's defeat in the 34-day war, that he first discussed the possibility of war in January and asked to see military plans in March.
The key was a reason to launch the offensive which Hizbullah provided when they kidnapped the soldiers with Mr Olmert saying at the time that Israel went to war to force their return. In the fighting 1,200 Lebanese and 158 Israelis were killed. Of the dead almost 1,000 Lebanese and 41 Israelis were civilians.
Not the first time a leader has lied to take his well armed country to war is it but it is becoming a bit of a nasty habit lately.

Contingency plans based on prior kidnappings of soldiers were drawn up. The decision to implement them was made after Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were abducted by Hezbollah terrorists.

"The scenario presented in the various assessments reflected prior incidents: the abduction of soldiers from Israeli territory accompanied by heavy cross-border shelling. Then-chief of staff Dan Halutz said such an incident would have far-reaching consequences for Israel's deterrent capability. Halutz said Israel could not show restraint in the face of a kidnapping in the north, and it had to respond. Olmert testified that he accepted this stance.

In a meeting in March, Olmert asked the army commanders whether operational plans existed for such a possibility, and they said yes. He asked to see the plans, and they asked why. He responded that he did not want to make a snap decision in the case of an abduction, and preferred to decide at that moment. Presented with the options, he selected a moderate plan that included air attacks accompanied by a limited ground operation. At the time, Shaul Mofaz was defense minister."

I don't think anyone can argue that Hezbollah didn't know that continued provocation would lead to a response.

It would be nice if the first response from those that are constantly critical of military intervention wasn't always "THEY LIED".

DP - Olmert is on his way out and Sharon is in his coma and being used as a roundabout somewhere so maybe someone a bit less kill-happy will move in instead.

I always wonder just exactly what was written when it states comment deleted, and why the author deleted their comment.

Deadman said...

I deleted it because I decided that leaving it was pointless.

DP and you will never see this issuer the same way as I and others so there's not much point in trying to rebut your statements.

Namaste

DP, I and most of the World it seems.

Well I didn't see much in the way of commentary from DP to rebut.

Well, if mark won't say it, I will. When you have a well armed enemy at your northern border, loading the hills with missiles and weapons, you would be an idiot not to have plans to take care of business should this enemy provoke, which it did.

This half-informed, knee-jerk, anti-israeli diatribe just gets old.

And anyone who's impressed with dp's commentary... well, it's telling, let's just say.

So if a country has a well armed enemy to its south, such as say Lebanon has, a well armed enemy to its west, such as Palestine has, a well armed enemy to its North, such as Egypt has, you would be an idiot not to have plans to take care of business should this enemy provoke?

You didn't understand DP saying that he thought Marks words were a load of hot air? Did you not get that?

It may surprise you but "the entire arab world is out to destroy us" was really a myth that was fed by your own leaders to you. Find out more by watching these videos:

lucy,

"maybe someone a bit less kill-happy will move in instead."

More than 90% of Israelis supported invasion of Lebanon. A PM who is "less kill-happy" will be perceived as "weak" by Israelis and will be removed from power immediately. Israelis want Attila the Hun for their next PM.
