Madeleine’s Parents Face New Slurs

The Portuguese media have once again been getting stuck into the parents of
Madeleine McCann. There have been claims that intercepted phone calls and emails have influenced the police’s new theory that Madeleine died in her apartment.
Ever since the four year olds disappearance there have been barely disguised whispers from some quarters that Madeleine's parents know more than they have let on.
The McCanns and seven friends who were dining together near the apartment where Madeleine was sleeping have come under suspicion following leaks from Portuguese police and the discovery of traces of blood in the girl’s bedroom. All have been interviewed by police about their movements during that evening although unconfirnmed reports have said that the parents and the group members have been kept under police surveillance.
The latest twist is that the police have all but dismissed the idea that she was kidnapped and are concentrating their efforts on the idea that she died in the apartment.

The story is becoming more and more macabre isn't it? I won't rush to judgement about what the McCanns possibly do or don't know, but I will say that with any child disappearance like this, and the longer the crime goes unsolves, the greater the likelihood of speculation that the parents did it. A bit like the Azaria Chamberlain and Jon Benet Ramsey cases.

I have no knowledge or opinion of their guilt or innocence, but I will say that no parent worth the title leaves children that young unattended while they go eat. They should be charged with reckless child endangerment, IMO (and I have seen the definition of that crime many times in the last month). The only person in this mess that I have any sympathy for is Madeleine herself.

So how many non-white little girls have gone missing and garnered so much media attention, good or bad? Jon Benet is still a regular news story here in Colorado.

I find these new theories disturbing. It hints at a dark side of human nature which I try to ignore.

Azaria Chamberlain did occupy the minds of Australians for decades. Are there wild dogs in Portugal?

Cheers.

If the parents are not the "culprits," their grief from this mystery must be unbearable.
