Matt Hancock was amongst several Conservative Ministers doing the Sunday mornings TV rounds today urging people to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives as the latest variant of the Coronavirus rips through the country, not the UK Variant, they don't like it being called that, the new variant which is 50% more infectious.
Of course we should all agree with the Conservative message, it is all about saving lives, but protecting the NHS sticks in the craw a bit because protecting the NHS was something the Conservatives had been willfully not doing until the pandemic hit.
In the election of 2010, David Cameron made a big show of using his disabled son as proof that the NHS would be safe in his hands, well that pledge immediately fell by the wayside as the Government forced tens of billions of NHS cuts which closed 44 hospitals and treatment centres losing 15,000 beds, made 20,000 nurses redundant and closed support facilities.
The Tory Government under Cameron, May and now Johnson cronically underfunded the NHS, raising the annual budget by 1% each year instead of the historical 4% it needs each year so it isn't hard to do the sums and arrive at a deliberate ploy to underfund and run the NHS down to such a point that Private hospitals and medical insurance becomes the only game in town.
Those 15,000 beds, 20,000 extra nurses and 44 hospitals would certainly come in handy right about now so yes, the NHS is in crisis but it was before the outbreak due to a right wing Government hell bent on running down the NHS so protect the NHS which is a darn sight more than the these Conservatives ever did.
