Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign

Possibly taking a leaf from the Atheist bus campaign last year, buses in Seattle are to carry this advertisement bringing attention to Israeli war crimes.
Paid for by the the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign, their mission is to break through the silence over Israel's mistreatment of Palestinians. The SMAC website states that they are a number of national and international groups using mainstream advertising media to increase public awareness of U.S. taxpayer complicity in Israel’s denial of Palestinian rights.
Stop30billion is a reference to the $30 billion in military aid that the United States has pledged to Israel over the next decade and the campaign is timed to coincide with the second anniversary of Israel's horrific assault on Gaza.
"The ads are to raise awareness that our tax dollars are being spent in one-sided support of the state of Israel and particularly of those policies of Israel that violate human rights and maintain the bad situation" said a SMAC spokesman.
Asked in the Seattle Times about if the ad could incite violence against Jews, the spokesman explained, 'My experience is that those who want to defend Israel right or wrong want also to stop dialogue, stop discussion, stop education, stop public awareness, and will use a wide range of tactics, and this is one.'

Israel will continue to treat Palestinians with impunity until America and others stop funding its military and have to pay its own way which will force it to the negotiating table so this is a small start in bringing to attention what the American media doesn't tell, Israel is using your money to kill civilians, steal land, destabilise the Middle East and run an apartheid system worthy of South Africa.
Maybe you are happy with your money going to support all that or hopefully you will go off and find out a bit more about it and realise what has been going on.
Well done the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign, i wish you luck because i guarantee the anti-semitism chorus will be in full voice.

It's a small step, Lucy, but an important one.

Most Americans are totally ignorant about what goes on in the world and the damage that their country is doing in so many places.

Advertising like this cuts across their indoctrination and may cause a few wrinkled brows but don't expect much change.

Americans just watch their Faux News and drink beer. For them, the rest of the world doesn't exist!

A very small step in the right direction i agree.

David,

15m Americans watch Fox news daily... last count there were over 300m Americans. Your statements eliminate any inkling of credibility your opinions might have.

and since when does anybody from australia get off talking about others drinking beer.

according to WHO http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/global_status_report_2004_overview.pdf

australians drink more than Americans (and just about anybody else for that matter).

Q, you provide perfect proof for why oligarchs run the U.S. so easily. You repeat the oligarch propaganda line word perfectly. You also demonstrate why the MSM in the U.S. is just another arm of Government.

Have you ever had an original idea in your life or are you content just being a servile mouthpiece for the corrupt, imperial U.S. Government?

You are out of step with many of your countrymen. Tell you what. Why don't you make some comments on Information Clearing House and see what kind of reception you get.

Your endless, tiresome 'America is wonderful' comments on Lucy's blog are both boring and misleading!

Here you go, Dave.

Hippy is an emotionally charged word? I quite happily refer to myself as having hippy tendencies (the love & peace bit, not the large amount of drugs and tie-dye).
Socialist is on the list as well? No wonder i get sworn at so much on other blogs. Hippy and socialist!!

Let's see, the Israeli's pull out of Gaza, those nice liberal Hamas guys start launching thousands of rockets into Israeli civilian territories and the Israelis react promptly. Where's the outrage about the Hamas attacks?? There aren't any because the Seattle sign guys have a twisted view of the facts. Either really dumb or hateful---maybe both.

Yes, I'd definitely say that both 'hippy' and 'socialist' can be emotionally charged terms. Back when I used to comment on political blogs (at around the time of the invasion of Iraq), I was frequently called a socialist by people on the right who disagreed with me but didn't have the intellectual wherewithal (let alone the empirical evidence) to rebut me point-by-point.

And I don't recall being specifically called a 'hippy', but I know that this word is frequently used as a pejorative term against people who rally for a solution to global warming issues.

Bottom line is that these labels don't mean shit without evidence.

When I posted that helpful link, it was more the avoidance of 'argumentum ad hominem' and the presentation of actual evidence that I thought Dave-o might benefit from reading about, Lucy.

As well as these ones...

"Be polite.
Treat people as individuals.
Read the post you are responding to.
Stay open to learning."

Just between you and me, I'm not sure he's mastered all of those.

david,

with 300m americans you can find a group that advocates anything. we still have KKK and neo-nazis. the fact that a group of americans (mostly Americans of Arabic desent and a dozen or so anti-intellectuals at your blog) dont like israel doesnt make them correct - admittedly that doesn't make them wrong either.

the point i was trying to make with you (oh master of original thoughts) is that your off the wall statements (that americans only get their data from fox news and that they sit aorund and drink beer) do you a disservice. though on second thought maybe they reveal your true intellect. i see you as having a good heart and good motive but that is about the only compliment i can afford you.

by the way i'm still looking for an original thought from you. surely you aren't implying that your endless anti-american rhetoric is original thought? anybody can pick a side and start tossing verbal bombs. which you do liberally.

your economic thoughts come from marx. your religious thoughts can be attributed to many atheists. your government thoughts come from stalin, lenin, mussolini. where is that original thought oh master of the universe?

Lucy, Happy Xmas to you and all who frequent your blog, yes, even Cheezy and Q to whom I bear no ill-will!

Hopefully next year the world will move in a more positive, more peaceful direction but I've been saying that for a long, long time.

Sigh.
