Could You Repeat That Address Please?

The people of Lunt in Merseyside have had enough of outsiders making use of black tape on their town signs and are seeking to change its name to Launt.
"We are all painfully aware of the repeated times our village sign is defaced by yobs. Drive in every day and you see a very offensive word" snorted a local but the Lunts should count themselves lucky because there are some worse named places to live.
I imagine the people of Shag Harbour in Newfoundland and Knob Lick in Kentucky get there fair share of sniggers when they have to give their address and it can't be much fun admitting you are a Big Knobber like the citizens of Big Knob in Kentucky.
Then there are the villagers of Sugartit also in Kentucky, Bastard in Ontario, Pratts Bottom in England and it is not hard to imagine that the movers and shakers keep it quiet about being big in Poopoo, Hawaii.
It is unlikely that the people of Oregon say they fancy a day out to Poop Creek or to Climax in Saskatchewan and the mind boggles how Dildo in Newfoundland got its name. You could always move to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in Wales or just swallow your pride and accept your lot. It can't be that bad and you never hear the people from Fucking in Austria complain.

I believe the locals refer to it as simply "fucking Austria"...

Hilarious post. A great start to the day :)

There's "White Settlement, Texas"

Don't forget Intercourse, Pennsylvania. I have to admit it's got nothing on Australia, though.

Kentucky’s founding fathers had one nutty sense of humor, eh?

The list of funny named towns i was reading seemed to feature Kentucky and Texas quite a lot. Maybe the town namers back in the day in those places were hitting the moonshine a bit too hard at the town meetings.

Lucy,

Can't have too much moonshine. The problem was more likely that too many of the towns were setteled by Brits...

The Germans picked good names like Kerrville, Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Boerne...

The Spanish named towns San Antonio, Gonzales, Del Rio, El Paso, Amarillo, Seguin, Blanco, Bandera, Floresville, San Marcos...

Then there is the Russian influence like Odessa, the French influence like Paris (yes Texas has its own Paris - but don't go there), the Dutch influence like Orange.

No doubt about it, all the weird names are English...

I will bow to your knowledge of Texas Q and agree that you are probably right. It always sounds strange hearing American cities named after British cities with the word 'New' infront of them. I will have to try and track down a blogger from my home city with New infront of it and compare notes.

The American South does indeed have a plethora of interesting names. Alabama has Burnt Corn and Muck City, Arkansas with Experiment and Toad Suck, Georgia has Cumming (been there!) and Hopeulikit (is it lick or like?), North Carolina's got Bumlevel and Meat Camp and of course Tennessee has Nameless and Sweet Lips.
