In Western Christianity, today is all about the visit of the three Kings to Jesus which makes the Nativity plays a bit confusing because apparently they never turned up following a star on the night he was born but shipped up with their presents much later.
Turns out that when the early Christians were fudging the dates to make Jesus's birth fit neatly into the end of Saturnalia so they could usurp the Roman Festival, they forgot about the wise men and just stuck with January 6th and hoped nobody would ask any awkward questions about it.
The three wise men were an important part of the Bible story, mainly because wise men turning up with presents featured in many of the earlier religions such as at the birth of Buddha, Crishna, Rama and Confucius and if three wise men were good enough for them than they were good enough for their guy also.
The Bible is not clear on how many wise men there were, it was generally assumed as there was three presents there must have been three of them and at some point someone named them as Belthazar, Gaspar and Melchior and led to Parents being more careful than usual not to make any spills in December because there would be a distinct lack of tea towels in our homes due to Christmas, spirited away onto the heads of wise men and shepherds at the school nativity play.
Despite being lumbered with 2 lbs of Myrhh, things turned out okay for the kid after they left, the Romans nailing him to a cross thing aside, but things have been a bit quiet on the 'birth of saviours' front recently but the three of them are always available if a new saviour is born.
