It hasn't been easy trying to defend footballers in recent times and to be fair, i never bother trying but the current England Team deserve a massive round of applause as we seem to have bunch of socially conscious players who have not only been making a stand against racism but making a stand for the NHS and taking on the Government over free school and led by a manager who said in an open letter to fans that ' It’s the players duty to continue to interact with the public on matters such as equality, inclusivity and racial injustice, while using the power of their voices to help put debates on the table, raise awareness and educate'.
His letter was a reaction to Boris Johnson refusing to condemn those booing and jeering the gesture and Home Secretary Priti Patel branded the act of footballers taking the knee as 'gesture politics', Jacob Rees Mogg calling the taking of the knee 'problematic' and MP Lee Anderson saying he would be boycotting the tournament over the gesture.
Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has successfully lobbied the government into two U-turns over its free school meals policy, Raheem Sterling of Manchester City has supported the Black Lives Matter movement and launched a foundation to help disadvantaged young people
while Liverpool's Jordan Henderson and Manchester United's Harry Maguire masterminded a charitable fund raising money from footballers to support NHS staff and patients during the Coronavirus pandemic.
I am sure that they are plenty of the likes of Ashley Cole, John Terry, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs still plying their trade in front of the TV Camera's but the current England squad, and Manager, are hopefully an example for the next generation of footballers, fans and politicians.
